Description
|
September 2008 - February 2009
Scottish Women’s Aid (SWA) is the umbrella organisation for a network of 39 independent Women’s Aid groups throughout Scotland, with 30 years experience of working with, supporting and listening to women, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse.
The training provided by SWA draws on this experience whilst recognising the potential constraints affecting different agencies.
The training, study days and seminars provided by SWA are based on understanding domestic abuse as a gendered issue: that domestic abuse is on the continuum of violence against women and explained within a historical context of gendered roles and expectations. This understanding is in keeping with the Scottish Government’s ‘National Strategy to Address Domestic Abuse’. All training is underpinned by the definition of domestic abuse contained within the National Strategy:
“Domestic abuse (as gender based abuse) can be perpetrated by partners or ex-partners and can include physical abuse (assault and physical attack involving a range of behaviour), sexual abuse (acts which degrade and humiliate women and are perpetrated against their will, including rape) and mental and emotional abuse (such as threats, verbal abuse, racial abuse, withholding money and other types of controlling behaviour such as isolation from family and friends).”
SWA is committed to providing learning opportunities which are of a consistently high standard and quality, and which are designed to be participative with an emphasis on both understanding theory and practical skills development.
The aim of training days is to promote good practice in order to improve service delivery to women, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women. The aim of study days and seminars is to take a theory-based approach to the exploration of current thinking and discourse around various themes and issues pertinent to the violence against women agenda.
