User Involvement in Mental Health Services: A Study in Grampian

This research aimed to explore user involvement activities within mental health services in the locality from the perspectives of those who take part.  Based on fieldwork carried out in 2003, it found that service users perceive their level of involvement and influence within statutory mental health services in the region to be limited at present.  Benefits and barriers associated with the development of user involvement initiatives were identified in relation to: speaking, taking part, understanding, giving and taking power, and seeing differences and inequalities.

A briefing paper outlining key findings from this study is now available.  Contact Lydia Lewis to receive a copy (e-mail: l.lewis@abdn.ac.uk; tel: 01224 274357; write to: School of Social Science, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen AB24 3QY).

Pillar Aberdeen - "Bridging the Gap" Mental Health and Wellbeing Needs of Minority Ethnic Communities in Aberdeen

Pillar Aberdeen have recently published their ‘Bridging the Gap’ report, based upon research undertaken here in Aberdeen over the winter of 2003-2004 into the mental health needs and perceptions of members of Aberdeen’s small but diverse (and growing) minority ethnic communities. The report examines the problems faced by minority ethnic people in Aberdeen in accessing existing mental health services within the City, as well as identifying particular mental health needs that are currently unmet within the area.

It highlights people’s perceptions and understandings of mental health problems and difficulties from a variety of minority ethnic perspectives and goes on to make recommendations as to how various issues identified might be addressed.
