Setting Up a "Home from Home" Near the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa

Home is a place where a person lives, spends much of their time, or feels generally comfortable. It is often a place of refuge and safety, where worldly cares fade, where you can focus on things and people you love.

When a child needs treatment for leukaemia, this can mean travelling long distances to the hospital. Parents with a child undergoing treatment for cancer are often left bewildered and anxious. Not only is travelling exhausting for both the sick child but also for the parents and any accompanying children. Once at the hospital, they need accommodation close by while treatment is being carried out and this is expensive. All of which adds to their stress.

We want to help by giving parents and kids the opportunity to regain a sense of normality in their lives at the nearby Zoe-Lee Foundation's Home from Home. For free. We aim to provide a relaxed, non-clinical, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Families will be able to rest and relax in between treatments and their child too, if they are well enough.

What Facilities Do We Aim to Provide in Our Home from Home?

A self catering property within walking distance of Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, providing accommodation for up to several families with:

• Well equipped kitchens
• Washing machines, tumble driers and irons
• Several bedrooms of varying sizes with different numbers of beds
• Several bathrooms
• Comfortable sitting rooms with TVs, books and games
• Indoor and outdoor play area

Help us to raise enough money to establish this vitally important Home from Home in Cape Town. Families are suffering unnecessarily when their children are being treated for cancer. We can reduce some of their stress by giving them somewhere comfortable to stay close to the hospital.
