Celebration of International Women's Day, Aberdeen Citadel, March 8th 2009 At this event, Aberdeen Women's Alliance adopted the World Café format to bring together women across the city to identify what mattered most to women in their communities. They also identified positive actions they and others could take to improve their lives and those of their communities. A crèche was provided at Leaping Leopards, Shoe Lane. Participants had an opportunity to hear about AWA's campaign to raise public awareness on gender equality. Local community activists shared their personal experiences of contributing to their local communities. More info... |
| How Women from Ethnic Minorities Tackle Domestic Violence
On the 25th November 2008, the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, at Aberdeen Citadel AWA organised an awareness raising event - 'How Women from Ethnic Minorities Tackle Domestic Violence'. The awareness event was very successful, with individual women and representatives from different local women's groups, particularly those in the Aberdeen Domestic Abuse Partnership. Two key speakers did very impressive presentations at the event - Girijamba Polubothu from Shakti Women's Aid in Edinburgh and Maariyah Masud Adam from AMINA in Dundee.They shared their expertise on how domestic violence manifested itself in ethnic minority families and how it could and should be tackled. |
