Aberdeen Greenspace Trust Limited

Aberdeen Countryside Project Logo

Aberdeen Greenspace Trust Limited (previously know as Aberdeen Countryside Project) was established in October 1997 as a joint initiative between Aberdeen City Council, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Forestry Commission.

The initiative took the form of a company limited by guarantee to which these three public bodies were the initial subscribers.

The prime purpose of establishing Aberdeen Greenspace was to channel Landfill Tax Credit Scheme funds into projects which enhance the natural environment within the boundary of the City of Aberdeen and improve access to and between open areas within the city and to the wider countryside outside the city.

The company achieved early registration with ENTRUST, the regulatory body for the Landfill Tax credit scheme, and was recognised as a registered charity in June 2000. Aberdeen Countryside Project is a founder member of Greenspace Scotland, the national body promoting greenspace in Scotland.

Funders and Partners

Aberdeen Greenspace Trust Limited has four founding partners:

Aberdeen City Council

Aberdeen City Council - The local authority is represented on the Board of Aberdeen Countryside Project by four Aberdeen City Councillors. Aberdeen Countryside Project receives half the Landfill Community Fund raised by the city and it also contributes £14,000 per annum to assist in funding the project.

Forestry Commission

Forestry Commission Scotland has two places on the Board of Aberdeen Countryside Project but at present has only taken up one of these posts. FCS was created on 1 April 2003 and serves as the forestry department of the Scottish Executive, advising on and implementing forestry policy and managing the national forest estate. Its mission statement is:

“Our mission is to protect and expand Scotland's forests and woodlands and increase their value to society and the environment.”

Scottish Natural Heritage

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has two places on the Board of Aberdeen Countryside Project. SNH works with Scotland's people to care for our natural heritage. SNH promotes its care and improvement, its responsible enjoyment, its greater understanding and appreciation, and its sustainable use, now and for future generations.

SNH grant aids the post of Assistant Project Officer in his work with the Aberdeen Countryside Project Volunteer Group as well as grant aiding specific projects.

Landfill Communities Fund

The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) is the principal funder of Aberdeen Countryside Project as it receives half the landfill tax raised within the city. This innovative tax credit scheme enables operators of landfill sites to contribute money to enrolled Environmental Bodies (EBs) to carry out projects that meet environmental objects contained in the Landfill Tax Regulations. Each project has to be approved by ENTRUST to ensure it meets the Landfill Tax Regulations.
